What is frozen shoulder?

Frozen shoulder, known medically as adhesive capsulitis, is a thickening and tightening of the capsule that surrounds your shoulder joint. Motion is genuinely lost rather than just painful, and it happens in every direction rather than one specific arc.

It usually starts with no clear injury. Pain comes first and worsens over weeks, then stiffness sets in and takes over, and eventually motion slowly returns. Left completely alone the whole cycle can run many months to a couple of years.

The most useful test is passive motion: if someone else lifts your arm and it still will not go, that points to the capsule rather than a muscle or tendon problem. That distinction matters, because a frozen shoulder does not respond to the aggressive stretching people instinctively try.

At Rebuild Chiropractic + Strength we work in the ranges your shoulder tolerates today and expand them, keep the surrounding tissue from stiffening alongside it, and load the shoulder as motion returns so you do not come out of it weak.

Common symptoms of frozen shoulder
Losing motion in every direction
Can't reach behind your back
Pain that woke you before stiffness did
Passive motion is limited too
Started without any injury
Struggling to put on a coat or seatbelt
Common Causes

What causes frozen shoulder?

Frozen shoulder does not need an injury to start, but there are patterns that make it far more likely.

A period of not moving it

After an injury, a sling, or surgery anywhere on that arm, the capsule can tighten quickly. This is the most common starting point.

Diabetes and thyroid conditions

Both substantially increase your risk and tend to make the course longer, which changes how we plan and pace your care.

Age and sex

It shows up most often between roughly 40 and 60, and more frequently in women.

A previous frozen shoulder

Having had one raises the odds of the other shoulder following, which is worth knowing early.

Don't guess which one is yours — booking takes a few seconds.

OUR APPROACH

How we treat frozen shoulder

Instead of masking symptoms, we focus on restoring healthy movement and rebuilding tolerance for load — one-on-one with Dr. Luke Bergner, DC, at our Overland Park office.

01

Free consultation

A short call about what hurts, how long it's been going on, and what you've already tried. Free, no obligation. If we're not the right fit, we'll tell you and point you somewhere better.

What you leave with: an honest answer on whether we can help.

02

Comprehensive evaluation

Full history plus movement, orthopedic and strength testing — because where it hurts is rarely where the problem started. You get the findings and your first treatment on the same visit.

What you leave with: a diagnosis, a plan, and treatment the same day.

03

A plan you can actually follow

Hands-on care to get you moving now, progressive loading so it holds. Built around your sport, your job and the hours you actually have — not a generic protocol.

What you leave with: exercises that fit your week, not someone else's.

04

Coaching between visits

Recovery doesn't only happen in the office. Every exercise comes with video in a private coaching app, and we adjust it as your symptoms and schedule change. Message us when you're stuck.

What you leave with: no guessing between appointments.

05

Build strength so it stays fixed

Most care stops when the pain does. We keep going until the area is stronger than it was before, so the same flare-up doesn't show up again next season.

What you leave with: a body that holds up without us.

Dr. Luke Bergner is a fantastic coach and guide. I can’t say enough good things about his approach. He truly listens, educates, and tailors his input and exercises to meet me where I am, while encouraging me to challenge myself. He builds confidence and strength! He’s thoughtful, flexible, encouraging, and thorough. I have autoimmune symptoms that were causing pain and limiting my lifestyle. Dr. Luke asked questions, learned, and provided me with options so that I could adapt to my symptoms day by day and still move forward. I’m grateful and glad that I went to see Dr. Luke!

I am very pleased with the results I got from my experience working with Dr. Luke on some back/hip issues. I was leery with his different approach to address my discomfort but his treatment really does seek to rebuild you and give you a long-term fix. He is extremely flexible and worked around some crazy travel plans I had during our time together to make sure I still got the results I wanted. I cannot recommend enough at least taking a phone call with him to discuss any long-term, lingering pain issues you might have to see if you'd be a good fit for one of his programs.

I went to see Dr. Luke at the recommendation of my sister to see about some SI Joint pain that was limiting my strength and mobility. This was about two weeks from a CrossFit competition, and I didn’t know if I was going to be able to compete as well as I knew I could. Within those two weeks, Dr. Luke worked with me to regain my strength and mobility so that I was able to compete and compete well. I would recommend him to anyone not only because of his expertise, but also his determination to keep people moving and to keep them doing what it is they enjoying doing.

TOP QUESTIONS FROM YOU

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a chiropractor in Overland Park treat frozen shoulder?

Yes. We use joint and soft tissue work to regain motion and progressive loading as range returns. If your case stalls or needs an injection or imaging to move forward, we will tell you and help you get there.

How long does frozen shoulder last?

It is genuinely slow, often many months through its stages if nothing is done. Care will not skip the biology, but it does regain usable range sooner and keeps you from losing strength along the way.

Should I stretch a frozen shoulder aggressively?

No. Forcing an irritated capsule usually flares it and sets you back. We work at the edge of what the shoulder tolerates and move that edge, which is a different thing entirely.

Is frozen shoulder the same as shoulder impingement?

No. Impingement keeps most of its range but pinches in a specific arc. Frozen shoulder loses motion in every direction, including when someone else moves your arm for you. See our shoulder impingement page if that sounds more like you.

Do I need an MRI for frozen shoulder in Overland Park?

Usually not. Frozen shoulder is diagnosed clinically from your motion pattern and history. Imaging matters when the findings suggest something else is going on.
