What Is Neck Pain?

The neck supports the weight of your head all day while allowing a wide range of movement, which makes it vulnerable to strain and irritation. Neck pain can involve the joints, discs, muscles, and nerves of the cervical spine, and it often shows up as stiffness, aching, or sharp pain that limits how far you can turn or tilt your head.

The underlying cause can vary from person to person and may involve joint dysfunction, muscle tension, disc irritation, poor posture, or stress. In some cases, neck problems also contribute to headaches or pain that travels into the shoulder and arm. Effective treatment begins with identifying the source of the problem instead of simply masking the pain, and a comprehensive evaluation guides the most appropriate course of care.

At Rebuild Chiropractic, we focus on restoring healthy movement, reducing stress on the cervical spine, and helping your body heal naturally. Our goal is not only to relieve your current symptoms but also to improve function and reduce the likelihood of future flare-ups.

Common symptoms of neck pain
Stiffness or pain turning your head
A sharp catch with certain movements
Ache into the shoulder blade or shoulder
Tightness that builds through the workday
Headaches starting at the base of the skull
Occasional tingling into the arm or hand
Common Causes

What Causes Neck Pain?

Neck pain usually comes from a combination of lost mobility, sustained position and low endurance. Identifying the mix is what makes treatment work.

Sustained positions

Screens, phones and driving keep the neck loaded in one position for hours at a time.

Lost mobility

Stiff neck and mid-back segments mean every turn of the head asks more of irritated tissue.

Deep neck weakness

When the deep stabilizers fatigue, surface muscles take over and stay tight.

Stress and clenching

Jaw and shoulder tension load the same muscles that are already working overtime.

Don't guess which one is yours — booking takes a few seconds.

OUR APPROACH

How We Treat Neck Pain

Instead of masking symptoms, we focus on restoring healthy movement and rebuilding tolerance for load — one-on-one with Dr. Luke Bergner, DC, at our Overland Park office.

01

Free consultation

A short call about what hurts, how long it's been going on, and what you've already tried. Free, no obligation. If we're not the right fit, we'll tell you and point you somewhere better.

What you leave with: an honest answer on whether we can help.

02

Comprehensive evaluation

Full history plus movement, orthopedic and strength testing — because where it hurts is rarely where the problem started. You get the findings and your first treatment on the same visit.

What you leave with: a diagnosis, a plan, and treatment the same day.

03

A plan you can actually follow

Hands-on care to get you moving now, progressive loading so it holds. Built around your sport, your job and the hours you actually have — not a generic protocol.

What you leave with: exercises that fit your week, not someone else's.

04

Coaching between visits

Recovery doesn't only happen in the office. Every exercise comes with video in a private coaching app, and we adjust it as your symptoms and schedule change. Message us when you're stuck.

What you leave with: no guessing between appointments.

05

Build strength so it stays fixed

Most care stops when the pain does. We keep going until the area is stronger than it was before, so the same flare-up doesn't show up again next season.

What you leave with: a body that holds up without us.

Dr. Luke Bergner is a fantastic coach and guide. I can’t say enough good things about his approach. He truly listens, educates, and tailors his input and exercises to meet me where I am, while encouraging me to challenge myself. He builds confidence and strength! He’s thoughtful, flexible, encouraging, and thorough. I have autoimmune symptoms that were causing pain and limiting my lifestyle. Dr. Luke asked questions, learned, and provided me with options so that I could adapt to my symptoms day by day and still move forward. I’m grateful and glad that I went to see Dr. Luke!

I am very pleased with the results I got from my experience working with Dr. Luke on some back/hip issues. I was leery with his different approach to address my discomfort but his treatment really does seek to rebuild you and give you a long-term fix. He is extremely flexible and worked around some crazy travel plans I had during our time together to make sure I still got the results I wanted. I cannot recommend enough at least taking a phone call with him to discuss any long-term, lingering pain issues you might have to see if you'd be a good fit for one of his programs.

I went to see Dr. Luke at the recommendation of my sister to see about some SI Joint pain that was limiting my strength and mobility. This was about two weeks from a CrossFit competition, and I didn’t know if I was going to be able to compete as well as I knew I could. Within those two weeks, Dr. Luke worked with me to regain my strength and mobility so that I was able to compete and compete well. I would recommend him to anyone not only because of his expertise, but also his determination to keep people moving and to keep them doing what it is they enjoying doing.

TOP QUESTIONS FROM YOU

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a chiropractor in OVERLAND PARK, KS help with neck pain?

Yes. Most neck pain comes from joint restriction, muscle tension, and postural load, all of which respond well to a combination of hands-on treatment and exercise.

Are neck adjustments safe?

Serious complications are extremely rare. We screen your history and exam findings first, use gentle and precise techniques, and if you would rather avoid neck adjustments entirely, we have effective low-force alternatives.

How many visits will I need?

It depends on your diagnosis, how long the problem has been there, and your goals. We map out a plan after your exam and adjust it as your neck responds.

Why do I wake up with neck pain?

Morning neck pain usually reflects a stiff neck meeting an unhelpful sleeping position. We treat the underlying stiffness and give you practical pillow and position guidance, which together usually solve it.

Is looking at my phone really damaging my neck?

The load of a dropped head position adds up over hours, but the bigger issue is staying in any one position too long. Variety and regular movement matter more than perfect posture.

Can neck problems cause headaches or arm symptoms?

Yes. Irritated joints and nerves in the neck commonly refer pain into the head, shoulder, and arm, sometimes with tingling. Your exam maps out where your symptoms are coming from.

Do I need a special pillow?

There is no single best pillow, only the right height and firmness for your build and sleeping position. We will give you simple criteria so you can judge yours.

Is it safe to lift weights with neck pain?

Generally yes, with sensible changes. We adjust the setups that load an irritated neck most, like bar position on squats and head position on presses, so you can keep training while it recovers.

Will my neck pain go away on its own?

Some episodes settle within days. Pain that keeps returning or lasts beyond a few weeks usually has a mechanical cause worth treating before it becomes a fixture.

When is neck pain serious?

Seek urgent medical care after significant trauma, or if you have arm weakness, progressive numbness, fever with a stiff neck, or a sudden severe headache unlike anything before.
