What Is Tennis Elbow?

Tennis elbow, known medically as lateral epicondylitis, affects the tendons that attach your forearm muscles to the outside of your elbow. Despite the name, most cases have nothing to do with tennis, and it commonly develops in people who perform repetitive gripping, typing, or manual work, causing pain and tenderness on the outer elbow.

The underlying cause can vary from person to person and may involve repetitive wrist and forearm use, sudden increases in activity, weak grip strength, or contributing problems in the shoulder and neck. While symptoms can range from mild soreness to pain that limits daily tasks, effective treatment begins with identifying the source of the problem instead of simply masking the pain. A comprehensive evaluation helps determine what is contributing to your symptoms and guides the most appropriate course of care.

At Rebuild Chiropractic, we focus on restoring healthy movement, reducing stress on the elbow and forearm, and helping your body heal naturally. Our goal is not only to relieve your current symptoms but also to improve function and reduce the likelihood of future flare-ups.

Common symptoms of tennis elbow
Pain or tenderness on the outside of your elbow
Ache that spreads into the forearm
Pain gripping, lifting or shaking hands
Weak grip — dropping things
Stiffness in the elbow in the morning
Eases during a warm-up, returns right after
Common Causes

What Causes Tennis Elbow?

Believe it or not, most of the patients we treat for tennis elbow have never played a set in their life. Whatever your hands repeat all week, it almost always traces back to one of these four:

Repetitive gripping

Tools, a mouse, dumbbells, a steering wheel — hundreds of hard closes of the hand add up faster than the tendon recovers.

Sudden increase in load

A new program, a busy stretch at work, a project at home. The jump in volume is the injury — not the activity itself.

Faulty mechanics

How you swing, lift, carry or sit funnels force straight into the outer elbow instead of spreading it across the arm.

Muscle weakness

Weak forearm and shoulder muscles leave the tendons covering the difference on every single rep.

Don't guess which one is yours — booking takes a few seconds.

OUR APPROACH

How We Treat Tennis Elbow

Instead of masking symptoms, we focus on restoring healthy movement and rebuilding tolerance for load — one-on-one with Dr. Luke Bergner, DC, at our Overland Park office.

01

Free consultation

A short call about what hurts, how long it's been going on, and what you've already tried. Free, no obligation. If we're not the right fit, we'll tell you and point you somewhere better.

What you leave with: an honest answer on whether we can help.

02

Comprehensive evaluation

Full history plus movement, orthopedic and strength testing — because where it hurts is rarely where the problem started. You get the findings and your first treatment on the same visit.

What you leave with: a diagnosis, a plan, and treatment the same day.

03

A plan you can actually follow

Hands-on care to get you moving now, progressive loading so it holds. Built around your sport, your job and the hours you actually have — not a generic protocol.

What you leave with: exercises that fit your week, not someone else's.

04

Coaching between visits

Recovery doesn't only happen in the office. Every exercise comes with video in a private coaching app, and we adjust it as your symptoms and schedule change. Message us when you're stuck.

What you leave with: no guessing between appointments.

05

Build strength so it stays fixed

Most care stops when the pain does. We keep going until the area is stronger than it was before, so the same flare-up doesn't show up again next season.

What you leave with: a body that holds up without us.

Dr. Luke Bergner is a fantastic coach and guide. I can’t say enough good things about his approach. He truly listens, educates, and tailors his input and exercises to meet me where I am, while encouraging me to challenge myself. He builds confidence and strength! He’s thoughtful, flexible, encouraging, and thorough. I have autoimmune symptoms that were causing pain and limiting my lifestyle. Dr. Luke asked questions, learned, and provided me with options so that I could adapt to my symptoms day by day and still move forward. I’m grateful and glad that I went to see Dr. Luke!

I am very pleased with the results I got from my experience working with Dr. Luke on some back/hip issues. I was leery with his different approach to address my discomfort but his treatment really does seek to rebuild you and give you a long-term fix. He is extremely flexible and worked around some crazy travel plans I had during our time together to make sure I still got the results I wanted. I cannot recommend enough at least taking a phone call with him to discuss any long-term, lingering pain issues you might have to see if you'd be a good fit for one of his programs.

I went to see Dr. Luke at the recommendation of my sister to see about some SI Joint pain that was limiting my strength and mobility. This was about two weeks from a CrossFit competition, and I didn’t know if I was going to be able to compete as well as I knew I could. Within those two weeks, Dr. Luke worked with me to regain my strength and mobility so that I was able to compete and compete well. I would recommend him to anyone not only because of his expertise, but also his determination to keep people moving and to keep them doing what it is they enjoying doing.

TOP QUESTIONS FROM YOU

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a chiropractor in OVERLAND PARK, KS help with tennis elbow?

Yes. We settle the irritated tendon, address contributing problems at the wrist, shoulder, and neck, and rebuild the tendon's load tolerance with progressive strengthening, which is what the evidence supports best.

I do not play tennis, so why do I have tennis elbow?

Most cases come from repetitive gripping and wrist work, whether that is a mouse and keyboard, tools, or lifting. The name is historical, the cause is cumulative load.

Why do pull-ups, rows, and curls flare it up?

All three hang heavy load off your grip, and every gripped rep pulls on the irritated tendon at the outer elbow. Lifting straps for your pulls and thicker-grip or neutral-grip variations reduce the demand while the tendon rebuilds.

Can I keep lifting?

Yes, and you generally should, since the training doubles as rehab when dosed right. We modify grip demands and the worst offenders, keep everything else, and progress the tendon work alongside.

How long does tennis elbow take to heal?

With structured loading, most people improve meaningfully within 6 to 12 weeks. Left alone it can grumble for a year or more, so doing the work beats waiting.

Do tennis elbow straps help?

A counterforce strap can take the edge off during aggravating tasks. Useful as a bridge while your strength work takes effect, but not a solution by itself.

Can it be coming from my neck?

Sometimes. Nerve irritation from the neck can refer into the outer elbow and forearm, so we screen your neck as part of the assessment, especially in stubborn cases.

What are the best exercises?

Progressive loading of the wrist extensors, starting with slow heavy isometrics and building from there. We tailor the starting point to your irritability and progress it week by week.

What about a cortisone injection?

Research on tennis elbow shows cortisone often helps briefly but leads to worse outcomes and higher recurrence at a year compared with rehab. We would rather build the tendon than rent relief.

When should I get it looked at further?

See a doctor if you have numbness or tingling in the hand, night pain that wakes you, symptoms after a distinct injury, or no progress despite consistent rehab.
