What Is Plantar Fasciopathy?

Plantar fasciopathy, often called plantar fasciitis, affects the thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot from the heel to the toes. When this tissue becomes irritated from repeated stress, it typically causes sharp or aching pain in the heel, especially with the first steps of the day or after long periods on your feet.

The underlying cause can vary from person to person and may involve sudden increases in activity, tight calf muscles, unsupportive footwear, or foot mechanics that place extra load on the fascia. While symptoms can range from mild morning stiffness to pain that limits walking, effective treatment begins with identifying the source of the problem instead of simply masking the pain. A comprehensive evaluation helps determine what is contributing to your symptoms and guides the most appropriate course of care.

At Rebuild Chiropractic, we focus on restoring healthy movement, reducing stress on the plantar fascia, and helping your body heal naturally. Our goal is not only to relieve your current symptoms but also to improve function and reduce the likelihood of future flare-ups.

Common symptoms of plantar fasciopathy
Sharp heel pain on your first steps in the morning
Pain returning after sitting a while
Ache along the arch or bottom of the foot
Worse after long days on your feet
Tender spot at the front of the heel bone
Tight calf on the same side
Common Causes

What Causes Plantar Fasciopathy?

Heel pain almost always follows a change in how much your feet have been asked to do. Identifying that change is what makes the plan work.

More time on your feet

A new job, a big project, a trip, or a jump in walking or running volume.

Footwear change

New shoes, less support, or going barefoot more than your feet are ready for.

Calf and foot weakness

Weak calves and foot muscles leave the fascia absorbing force it wasn't meant to.

Limited ankle mobility

A stiff ankle changes how the foot loads and drives strain straight into the heel.

Don't guess which one is yours — booking takes a few seconds.

OUR APPROACH

How We Treat Plantar Fasciopathy

Instead of masking symptoms, we focus on restoring healthy movement and rebuilding tolerance for load — one-on-one with Dr. Luke Bergner, DC, at our Overland Park office.

01

Free consultation

A short call about what hurts, how long it's been going on, and what you've already tried. Free, no obligation. If we're not the right fit, we'll tell you and point you somewhere better.

What you leave with: an honest answer on whether we can help.

02

Comprehensive evaluation

Full history plus movement, orthopedic and strength testing — because where it hurts is rarely where the problem started. You get the findings and your first treatment on the same visit.

What you leave with: a diagnosis, a plan, and treatment the same day.

03

A plan you can actually follow

Hands-on care to get you moving now, progressive loading so it holds. Built around your sport, your job and the hours you actually have — not a generic protocol.

What you leave with: exercises that fit your week, not someone else's.

04

Coaching between visits

Recovery doesn't only happen in the office. Every exercise comes with video in a private coaching app, and we adjust it as your symptoms and schedule change. Message us when you're stuck.

What you leave with: no guessing between appointments.

05

Build strength so it stays fixed

Most care stops when the pain does. We keep going until the area is stronger than it was before, so the same flare-up doesn't show up again next season.

Dr. Luke Bergner is a fantastic coach and guide. I can’t say enough good things about his approach. He truly listens, educates, and tailors his input and exercises to meet me where I am, while encouraging me to challenge myself. He builds confidence and strength! He’s thoughtful, flexible, encouraging, and thorough. I have autoimmune symptoms that were causing pain and limiting my lifestyle. Dr. Luke asked questions, learned, and provided me with options so that I could adapt to my symptoms day by day and still move forward. I’m grateful and glad that I went to see Dr. Luke!

I am very pleased with the results I got from my experience working with Dr. Luke on some back/hip issues. I was leery with his different approach to address my discomfort but his treatment really does seek to rebuild you and give you a long-term fix. He is extremely flexible and worked around some crazy travel plans I had during our time together to make sure I still got the results I wanted. I cannot recommend enough at least taking a phone call with him to discuss any long-term, lingering pain issues you might have to see if you'd be a good fit for one of his programs.

I went to see Dr. Luke at the recommendation of my sister to see about some SI Joint pain that was limiting my strength and mobility. This was about two weeks from a CrossFit competition, and I didn’t know if I was going to be able to compete as well as I knew I could. Within those two weeks, Dr. Luke worked with me to regain my strength and mobility so that I was able to compete and compete well. I would recommend him to anyone not only because of his expertise, but also his determination to keep people moving and to keep them doing what it is they enjoying doing.

TOP QUESTIONS FROM YOU

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a chiropractor in OVERLAND PARK, KS help with plantar fasciitis?

Yes. We improve foot and ankle mechanics, release the tight calf and arch tissue feeding the problem, and build a loading program that restores the fascia's capacity, which is what produces lasting change.

Why is the pain worst first thing in the morning?

The fascia shortens and stiffens overnight, so your first steps stretch irritated tissue cold. As treatment takes effect, those first steps are usually where you notice improvement earliest.

How long does plantar fasciitis take to heal?

Honestly, it can be stubborn. Many cases improve within 6 to 12 weeks of consistent treatment and loading, but long-standing cases can take several months. Starting properly beats waiting it out.

Do insoles or orthotics work?

They can offload the fascia and reduce pain in the short term, which is useful. They work best paired with calf and foot strengthening, otherwise you are managing the problem rather than fixing it.

Should I stop running?

Usually you can keep running with modified volume and intensity, guided by how your heel responds within 24 hours. Complete rest often just postpones the problem.

What shoes should I wear?

Comfort is the best guide, and sudden changes are the enemy. A slightly cushioned, supportive shoe helps while symptoms settle, and any move toward flatter footwear should be gradual.

Is it a heel spur?

Heel spurs show up on X-rays of plenty of pain-free feet, so the spur itself is rarely the problem. The irritated fascia is what hurts, and that is what we treat.

I am on my feet all day for work, how do I manage it?

Rotate between two pairs of supportive shoes, break up long static standing where you can, and build your calf and foot strength so the fascia is not doing all the work. Loading the tissue properly matters more than resting it.

What about cortisone injections?

They can give short-term relief but carry risks including fascia weakening, and the pain frequently returns. We view them as a later option, not a starting point.

When should I see a doctor about heel pain?

Get checked if you have numbness or tingling in the foot, pain at night or at rest, symptoms after significant trauma, or no progress despite consistent treatment.
