What Is a Rotator Cuff Injury?

The rotator cuff is a group of four muscles and tendons that stabilize the shoulder and control its movement. Rotator cuff injuries range from irritation and tendinopathy to partial or full tears, and they typically cause pain with overhead movement, weakness, and difficulty sleeping on the affected side.

The underlying cause can vary from person to person and may involve repetitive overhead activity, age-related tendon changes, a sudden injury, or shoulder mechanics that pinch the tendons. While many rotator cuff problems respond well to conservative care, effective treatment begins with identifying the type and source of the injury instead of simply masking the pain. A comprehensive evaluation helps determine what is contributing to your symptoms and guides the most appropriate course of care.

At Rebuild Chiropractic, we focus on restoring healthy movement, reducing stress on the rotator cuff, and helping your body heal naturally. Our goal is not only to relieve your current symptoms but also to improve function and reduce the likelihood of future flare-ups.

Common Causes

What causes a rotator cuff injury?

Rotator cuff pain rarely comes from one bad rep. It builds from how the shoulder has been loaded, and identifying which factor is driving yours is what makes a plan work.

Repetitive overhead load

Painting, racket sports, swimming, overhead pressing — the cuff works hardest above shoulder height.

Sudden increase in load

A new program or a heavy stretch of work asks for more than the cuff can currently give.

Poor shoulder blade control

If the shoulder blade doesn't move well, the cuff gets pinched doing a job it wasn't built for.

Stiff mid-back or neck

Lost rotation and extension above the shoulder forces the joint into positions it can't tolerate.

Don't guess which one is yours — booking takes a few seconds.

OUR APPROACH

How We Treat Rotator Cuff Injuries

Instead of masking symptoms, we focus on restoring healthy movement and rebuilding tolerance for load — one-on-one with Dr. Luke Bergner, DC, at our Overland Park office.

01

Free consultation

A short call about what hurts, how long it's been going on, and what you've already tried. Free, no obligation. If we're not the right fit, we'll tell you and point you somewhere better.

What you leave with: an honest answer on whether we can help.

02

Comprehensive evaluation

Full history plus movement, orthopedic and strength testing — because where it hurts is rarely where the problem started. You get the findings and your first treatment on the same visit.

What you leave with: a diagnosis, a plan, and treatment the same day.

03

A plan you can actually follow

Hands-on care to get you moving now, progressive loading so it holds. Built around your sport, your job and the hours you actually have — not a generic protocol.

What you leave with: exercises that fit your week, not someone else's.

04

Coaching between visits

Recovery doesn't only happen in the office. Every exercise comes with video in a private coaching app, and we adjust it as your symptoms and schedule change. Message us when you're stuck.

What you leave with: no guessing between appointments.

05

Build strength so it stays fixed

Most care stops when the pain does. We keep going until the area is stronger than it was before, so the same flare-up doesn't show up again next season.

What you leave with: a body that holds up without us.

Dr. Luke Bergner is a fantastic coach and guide. I can’t say enough good things about his approach. He truly listens, educates, and tailors his input and exercises to meet me where I am, while encouraging me to challenge myself. He builds confidence and strength! He’s thoughtful, flexible, encouraging, and thorough. I have autoimmune symptoms that were causing pain and limiting my lifestyle. Dr. Luke asked questions, learned, and provided me with options so that I could adapt to my symptoms day by day and still move forward. I’m grateful and glad that I went to see Dr. Luke!

I am very pleased with the results I got from my experience working with Dr. Luke on some back/hip issues. I was leery with his different approach to address my discomfort but his treatment really does seek to rebuild you and give you a long-term fix. He is extremely flexible and worked around some crazy travel plans I had during our time together to make sure I still got the results I wanted. I cannot recommend enough at least taking a phone call with him to discuss any long-term, lingering pain issues you might have to see if you'd be a good fit for one of his programs.

I went to see Dr. Luke at the recommendation of my sister to see about some SI Joint pain that was limiting my strength and mobility. This was about two weeks from a CrossFit competition, and I didn’t know if I was going to be able to compete as well as I knew I could. Within those two weeks, Dr. Luke worked with me to regain my strength and mobility so that I was able to compete and compete well. I would recommend him to anyone not only because of his expertise, but also his determination to keep people moving and to keep them doing what it is they enjoying doing.

TOP QUESTIONS FROM YOU

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a chiropractor in OVERLAND PARK, KS help a rotator cuff injury?

Yes. Most rotator cuff problems, including many tears, respond well to conservative care built around restoring shoulder mechanics and progressively strengthening the cuff. We also treat the neck and upper back, which influence how the shoulder moves.

Do I need surgery?

Most people do not. Degenerative and partial tears generally do as well with structured rehab as with surgery. Large traumatic tears in younger people are the main group needing a surgical opinion, and we will tell you honestly if that is you.

Do I need an MRI first?

Not usually. Cuff changes show up on scans of plenty of pain-free shoulders, so imaging alone can mislead. We refer for an MRI when trauma, marked weakness, or stalled progress makes it genuinely useful.

Can a torn rotator cuff heal on its own?

A full tear does not knit back together, but that is not the whole story. Pain and function can improve dramatically with strengthening, and many people live active, pain-free lives with tears they never know about.

Why does my shoulder hurt at night?

Lying on the shoulder compresses the irritated tendons, which is why night pain is one of the most common cuff complaints. It typically eases as the tendons settle, and we will give you positions that help in the meantime.

Can I keep lifting weights with a rotator cuff injury?

In most cases yes, with the program adjusted. We keep what your shoulder tolerates, modify pressing range and angles, and use the training itself as part of the rehab rather than something separate from it.

Is overhead pressing bad for my shoulders?

No, a well-loaded overhead press strengthens the cuff and the shoulder blade muscles that protect it. Problems come from loading faster than the shoulder adapts or pressing through a range it does not yet have, both of which are fixable.

How long does recovery take?

Cuff rehab is usually a 12 week or longer project, since tendons adapt slowly. Progress tends to be steady rather than sudden, and sticking with the program is what separates good outcomes from grumbling shoulders.

Would an injection help?

A cortisone injection can calm a highly irritable shoulder enough to allow rehab, and that is its best use. It relieves symptoms rather than fixing the cuff, so it should always be paired with strengthening.

When should I see a doctor urgently?

Seek prompt assessment if you suddenly cannot lift your arm after a fall or forceful injury, the shoulder looks deformed, or weakness is severe and immediate. Those signs need imaging sooner rather than later.
