What Is Knee Pain?

The knee is a hardworking joint that absorbs force with every step, squat, and jump. Knee pain can involve the joint itself, the kneecap, or the muscles, tendons, and ligaments that support it, and it often shows up as aching, swelling, stiffness, or pain with specific movements.

The underlying cause can vary from person to person and may involve tendon irritation, kneecap tracking problems, muscle imbalance, or age-related changes in the joint. Because the knee sits between the hip and the ankle, problems in those areas often contribute as well. Effective treatment begins with identifying the source of the problem instead of simply masking the pain, and a comprehensive evaluation guides the most appropriate course of care.

At Rebuild Chiropractic, we focus on restoring healthy movement, reducing stress on the knee joint, and helping your body heal naturally. Our goal is not only to relieve your current symptoms but also to improve function and reduce the likelihood of future flare-ups.

Common symptoms of knee pain

Common Causes

What Causes Knee Pain?

Knee pain can develop for several reasons. Identifying the underlying cause is essential for creating the most effective treatment plan.

Tendon Irritation

Repeated jumping, running, or lifting can inflame the tendons around the knee.

Kneecap Tracking Issues

Poor movement of the kneecap can cause pain at the front of the knee.

Muscle Imbalance

Weakness in the hips or thighs can place extra stress on the knee.

Degenerative Changes

Age-related wear in the joint can lead to stiffness, swelling, and discomfort.

It develops when the structures in and around the knee become irritated, overloaded, or restricted. The result can be pain, swelling, and stiffness that limit activity.

OUR APPROACH

How We Treat Knee Pain

Instead of masking symptoms, we focus on restoring healthy movement and rebuilding tolerance for load — one-on-one with Dr. Luke Bergner, DC, at our Overland Park office.

01

Free consultation

A short call about what hurts, how long it's been going on, and what you've already tried. Free, no obligation. If we're not the right fit, we'll tell you and point you somewhere better.

What you leave with: an honest answer on whether we can help.

02

Comprehensive evaluation

Full history plus movement, orthopedic and strength testing — because where it hurts is rarely where the problem started. You get the findings and your first treatment on the same visit.

What you leave with: a diagnosis, a plan, and treatment the same day.

03

A plan you can actually follow

Hands-on care to get you moving now, progressive loading so it holds. Built around your sport, your job and the hours you actually have — not a generic protocol.

What you leave with: exercises that fit your week, not someone else's.

04

Coaching between visits

Recovery doesn't only happen in the office. Every exercise comes with video in a private coaching app, and we adjust it as your symptoms and schedule change. Message us when you're stuck.

What you leave with: no guessing between appointments.

05

Build strength so it stays fixed

Most care stops when the pain does. We keep going until the area is stronger than it was before, so the same flare-up doesn't show up again next season.

What you leave with: a body that holds up without us.

Dr. Luke Bergner is a fantastic coach and guide. I can’t say enough good things about his approach. He truly listens, educates, and tailors his input and exercises to meet me where I am, while encouraging me to challenge myself. He builds confidence and strength! He’s thoughtful, flexible, encouraging, and thorough. I have autoimmune symptoms that were causing pain and limiting my lifestyle. Dr. Luke asked questions, learned, and provided me with options so that I could adapt to my symptoms day by day and still move forward. I’m grateful and glad that I went to see Dr. Luke!

I am very pleased with the results I got from my experience working with Dr. Luke on some back/hip issues. I was leery with his different approach to address my discomfort but his treatment really does seek to rebuild you and give you a long-term fix. He is extremely flexible and worked around some crazy travel plans I had during our time together to make sure I still got the results I wanted. I cannot recommend enough at least taking a phone call with him to discuss any long-term, lingering pain issues you might have to see if you'd be a good fit for one of his programs.

I went to see Dr. Luke at the recommendation of my sister to see about some SI Joint pain that was limiting my strength and mobility. This was about two weeks from a CrossFit competition, and I didn’t know if I was going to be able to compete as well as I knew I could. Within those two weeks, Dr. Luke worked with me to regain my strength and mobility so that I was able to compete and compete well. I would recommend him to anyone not only because of his expertise, but also his determination to keep people moving and to keep them doing what it is they enjoying doing.

TOP QUESTIONS FROM YOU

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a chiropractor in OVERLAND PARK, KS help with knee pain?

Yes. We treat the knee itself along with the hip and ankle mechanics that drive most knee problems. Restoring how the whole leg moves and loads is usually what gets knees better.

Why does my knee hurt on stairs and squats?

Those movements load the joint between your kneecap and thigh bone the most, so pain there usually points to a kneecap tracking or load tolerance issue. It responds well to targeted strength work and load management.

Do I need a scan?

Most knee pain does not need imaging to start treatment. We refer for a scan when there has been a significant injury, or when locking, giving way, or rapid swelling suggests structural damage.

Should my knees go past my toes when I squat?

Yes, that old rule has been thoroughly debunked. Your knees travel past your toes every time you walk down stairs, and squatting that way is safe once the knee is conditioned for it. The real issue is load jumping up faster than your knees can adapt.

Should I stop running or training?

Rarely completely. Most knees do better with modified load than with rest, so we adjust volume, intensity, and exercise selection to keep you moving while it settles.

Is my knee pain arthritis?

Not always, and even when it is, that is not a dead end. Strengthening the leg is one of the most effective treatments for arthritic knee pain and often delays or avoids more invasive options.

Can weak hips cause knee pain?

Yes, very commonly. When the hip muscles do not control the thigh well, the knee takes on stress it is not built for, which is why hip strengthening features in most of our knee programs.

Do knee braces or sleeves help?

They can add comfort and confidence in the short term, but they do not fix the cause. Think of strength as the brace you build from the inside.

Why do my knees ache after long runs?

Usually it is training load creeping up faster than the knee's capacity, rather than damage. Adjusting weekly mileage, increasing cadence slightly, and strengthening the hips and quads solves most run-related knee aches.

When is knee pain serious?

Seek prompt medical care if you felt a pop followed by rapid swelling, the knee locks or gives way, you cannot bear weight, or the joint is hot and swollen with a fever.
