TMJ & TMD Treatment
Jaw pain, clicking, headaches, and a jaw that feels tired by the end of the day. We treat the jaw and the neck together, because they almost never behave independently.
What is TMJ pain (TMD)?
TMJ pain is pain and dysfunction of the jaw joint and the muscles that move it — clinically called TMD, or temporomandibular joint disorder. It shows up as jaw pain, clicking or locking, headaches, ear pressure, or a jaw that aches after a day of talking and chewing.
The jaw doesn't work alone. Neck posture and mobility, clenching under stress, and the muscles of chewing all feed into it, which is why treatment aimed only at the joint often stalls out.
At Rebuild Chiropractic in Overland Park, we assess the jaw, neck and upper back together, release the muscles that are doing too much, restore joint motion, and retrain jaw and neck control so the symptoms stop returning.

What Causes TMD?
TMD is usually several small factors stacked on top of each other rather than one cause. Sorting out which ones apply to you is what makes treatment work.
Clenching and grinding
Sustained tension through the day or overnight overworks the jaw muscles and irritates the joint.
Neck and posture
A stiff upper neck and a forward head position change how the jaw tracks when it opens and closes.
Muscle imbalance
Overactive chewing muscles and poor jaw control leave the joint doing more work than it should.
Stress and habits
Gum, nail biting, phone-cradling and stress-driven tension keep the system from settling.
Don't guess which one is yours — booking takes a few seconds.
How we treat TMJ pain
Instead of masking symptoms, we focus on restoring healthy movement and rebuilding tolerance for load — one-on-one with Dr. Luke Bergner, DC, at our Overland Park office.
Free consultation
A short call about what hurts, how long it's been going on, and what you've already tried. Free, no obligation. If we're not the right fit, we'll tell you and point you somewhere better.
What you leave with: an honest answer on whether we can help.
Comprehensive evaluation
Full history plus movement, orthopedic and strength testing — because where it hurts is rarely where the problem started. You get the findings and your first treatment on the same visit.
What you leave with: a diagnosis, a plan, and treatment the same day.
A plan you can actually follow
Hands-on care to get you moving now, progressive loading so it holds. Built around your sport, your job and the hours you actually have — not a generic protocol.
What you leave with: exercises that fit your week, not someone else's.
Coaching between visits
Recovery doesn't only happen in the office. Every exercise comes with video in a private coaching app, and we adjust it as your symptoms and schedule change. Message us when you're stuck.
What you leave with: no guessing between appointments.
Build strength so it stays fixed
Most care stops when the pain does. We keep going until the area is stronger than it was before, so the same flare-up doesn't show up again next season.
What you leave with: a body that holds up without us.

Dr. Luke Bergner is a fantastic coach and guide. I can’t say enough good things about his approach. He truly listens, educates, and tailors his input and exercises to meet me where I am, while encouraging me to challenge myself. He builds confidence and strength! He’s thoughtful, flexible, encouraging, and thorough. I have autoimmune symptoms that were causing pain and limiting my lifestyle. Dr. Luke asked questions, learned, and provided me with options so that I could adapt to my symptoms day by day and still move forward. I’m grateful and glad that I went to see Dr. Luke!

I am very pleased with the results I got from my experience working with Dr. Luke on some back/hip issues. I was leery with his different approach to address my discomfort but his treatment really does seek to rebuild you and give you a long-term fix. He is extremely flexible and worked around some crazy travel plans I had during our time together to make sure I still got the results I wanted. I cannot recommend enough at least taking a phone call with him to discuss any long-term, lingering pain issues you might have to see if you'd be a good fit for one of his programs.

I went to see Dr. Luke at the recommendation of my sister to see about some SI Joint pain that was limiting my strength and mobility. This was about two weeks from a CrossFit competition, and I didn’t know if I was going to be able to compete as well as I knew I could. Within those two weeks, Dr. Luke worked with me to regain my strength and mobility so that I was able to compete and compete well. I would recommend him to anyone not only because of his expertise, but also his determination to keep people moving and to keep them doing what it is they enjoying doing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. We treat the jaw joint and the chewing muscles directly, along with the neck and posture problems that so often feed into TMD. Gentle, specific work in this area can make a significant difference.
Clicking usually comes from the small disc inside the joint moving as you open and close. Painless clicking is common and often harmless, but clicking with pain, locking, or limited opening is worth treating.
Very often, yes. The jaw and upper neck share muscles and nerve pathways, so tension and dysfunction in one commonly drives symptoms in the other. That is why we always assess both.
If you grind or clench at night, a dentist-fitted guard protects your teeth and can reduce joint load. It works best combined with treatment of the muscles and joints, since the guard does not address why you clench.
Most people clench hard under maximal effort, and the jaw muscles pay for it afterwards. Keeping the teeth slightly apart on lighter work and using a mouthguard for top-end lifts takes the load off while we settle the joint and muscles.
While your jaw is irritated, yes. Gum, very chewy foods, nail biting, and resting your chin on your hand all add load the joint does not need right now.
Yes, stress is one of the biggest drivers of clenching, often without you noticing. Building awareness of daytime clenching and keeping the teeth slightly apart at rest makes a real difference alongside treatment.
Permanent locking is rare. Episodes of catching or temporary locking usually reflect a disc problem that responds to conservative care, but repeated locking should be assessed promptly rather than waited out.
No. Jaw treatment uses gentle joint mobilization and precise muscle work in and around the jaw, along with treatment of the neck and upper back where needed.
See a dentist first if you have tooth pain, dental damage, or need a guard fitted, and seek medical care for facial swelling, fever, trauma, or a jaw stuck open or closed.
