Cupping in Overland Park, KS

Cupping

Some tight areas respond better to being lifted than pressed. At Rebuild Chiropractic, we use cupping to decompress restricted tissue, improve circulation, and free up movement that has been stuck.

What Is Cupping Therapy?

Cupping uses suction to lift skin and the tissue beneath it, creating space in an area that has become compressed and restricted. It works in the opposite direction to most hands-on treatment, which pushes down into tissue rather than drawing it up.

That decompression increases local blood flow and reduces the tension holding a layer of tissue to the one below it. Cups can be left in place over a tight area or moved along the tissue while you actively move the joint.

At Rebuild Chiropractic in Overland Park, cupping is used where restriction sits between tissue layers rather than deep within a single muscle. It is comfortable, it works quickly, and it pairs well with the movement work that follows.

Cupping may help if you have:
Broad areas of tightness through the back, shoulders, or legs
Tissue that feels stuck or bound down rather than simply tight
Ongoing soreness that has not cleared between training sessions
Restriction that is uncomfortable to treat with direct pressure
Stiffness across a large region rather than one specific point
Tightness that improves briefly but keeps returning after activity
the benefits

What Cupping Does

Suction changes tissue in a different way to pressure. Here is what that gives us.

Decompresses Tissue

Lifts restricted layers apart rather than compressing them together.

Increases Circulation

Draws blood flow into areas that have been tight and underserved.

Improves Tissue Glide

Helps layers of muscle and fascia move against each other again.

Comfortable Alternative

Reaches areas that are too sensitive for firm hands-on pressure.

Cupping creates space in tissue. Using that space through movement and progressive loading is what stops the restriction returning.

Dr. Luke Bergner is a fantastic coach and guide. I can’t say enough good things about his approach. He truly listens, educates, and tailors his input and exercises to meet me where I am, while encouraging me to challenge myself. He builds confidence and strength! He’s thoughtful, flexible, encouraging, and thorough. I have autoimmune symptoms that were causing pain and limiting my lifestyle. Dr. Luke asked questions, learned, and provided me with options so that I could adapt to my symptoms day by day and still move forward. I’m grateful and glad that I went to see Dr. Luke!

I am very pleased with the results I got from my experience working with Dr. Luke on some back/hip issues. I was leery with his different approach to address my discomfort but his treatment really does seek to rebuild you and give you a long-term fix. He is extremely flexible and worked around some crazy travel plans I had during our time together to make sure I still got the results I wanted. I cannot recommend enough at least taking a phone call with him to discuss any long-term, lingering pain issues you might have to see if you'd be a good fit for one of his programs.

I went to see Dr. Luke at the recommendation of my sister to see about some SI Joint pain that was limiting my strength and mobility. This was about two weeks from a CrossFit competition, and I didn’t know if I was going to be able to compete as well as I knew I could. Within those two weeks, Dr. Luke worked with me to regain my strength and mobility so that I was able to compete and compete well. I would recommend him to anyone not only because of his expertise, but also his determination to keep people moving and to keep them doing what it is they enjoying doing.

TOP QUESTIONS FROM YOU

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does cupping leave marks?

The suction draws blood toward the surface in areas where circulation has been poor. The marks are not bruises from trauma and are usually painless, and they typically fade within a few days to a week.

Does cupping hurt?

It should not. Most people describe a strong pulling sensation that is oddly relieving. If it becomes uncomfortable we reduce the suction, since more is not better here.

How long do the marks last?

Usually three to seven days, sometimes a little longer on a very restricted area. They tend to fade faster with each session as circulation improves.

Do the marks mean it worked?

No, and this is a common misconception. Darker marks mostly reflect local circulation, not treatment quality. We judge the session on how your movement changed, not on colour.

Can I train after cupping?

Yes, and light movement usually helps. We would keep intensity moderate in that area for the rest of the day, and will say so if it matters for your session.

Is Cupping in Overland Park Safe?

For most people, yes. We screen for skin conditions, bleeding disorders, and medications that make marking more likely before treating.

How is it different from massage?

Massage compresses tissue, cupping lifts it. That makes cupping useful where layers have become stuck together, or where direct pressure is too uncomfortable to tolerate.

How many sessions will I need?

Usually a small number. Cupping is a tool to unlock progress rather than ongoing maintenance, and as strength work takes hold the need for it drops off.

Should I avoid it before an event?

If the marks matter for appearance, plan around it. Physically it does not impair performance, but we would not introduce it for the first time in the days before a competition.

Tell us at your consultation. We can use gentler suction or choose a different tool entirely if marking is a concern for you.
