What Is Dry Needling?

Dry needling uses a thin filament needle placed into a tight or irritated band of muscle. The needle is dry, meaning nothing is injected. The effect comes from the input itself, which prompts the tissue to release and reduces the pain signalling around it.

Despite the shared tool, it is not acupuncture. The reasoning is based on anatomy and movement rather than meridians, and the target is chosen from a physical exam of which tissue is limiting you.

At Rebuild Chiropractic in Overland Park, dry needling is used to unlock a specific restriction so the rest of your plan can work. It is fast, precise, and almost always paired with movement immediately afterwards.

Dry needling may help if you have:
Tight bands or trigger points that keep returning after massage
Muscle tension that stretching relieves for hours, not days
Restricted motion that feels like something is blocking it
Pain that refers away from the spot that feels tight
A stubborn area that has not responded to hands-on work alone
Muscle tightness that keeps limiting your strength, control, or movement during training

Where Dry Needling Fits

It is a precise tool for a specific problem. Here is what it does well and how we use it.

Releases Tight Tissue

Reaches restricted muscle at a depth hands-on work cannot always access.

Reduces Local Pain

Calms irritated tissue and the pain signalling that comes with it.

Restores Movement Fast

Range often improves within the same visit, which makes rehab easier.

Targets the Right Spot

Placement is guided by exam findings, not by where you feel it most.

Needling creates a change in the tissue. Loading that tissue afterwards is what keeps the change, which is why it is never the only thing we do.

Dr. Luke Bergner is a fantastic coach and guide. I can’t say enough good things about his approach. He truly listens, educates, and tailors his input and exercises to meet me where I am, while encouraging me to challenge myself. He builds confidence and strength! He’s thoughtful, flexible, encouraging, and thorough. I have autoimmune symptoms that were causing pain and limiting my lifestyle. Dr. Luke asked questions, learned, and provided me with options so that I could adapt to my symptoms day by day and still move forward. I’m grateful and glad that I went to see Dr. Luke!

I am very pleased with the results I got from my experience working with Dr. Luke on some back/hip issues. I was leery with his different approach to address my discomfort but his treatment really does seek to rebuild you and give you a long-term fix. He is extremely flexible and worked around some crazy travel plans I had during our time together to make sure I still got the results I wanted. I cannot recommend enough at least taking a phone call with him to discuss any long-term, lingering pain issues you might have to see if you'd be a good fit for one of his programs.

I went to see Dr. Luke at the recommendation of my sister to see about some SI Joint pain that was limiting my strength and mobility. This was about two weeks from a CrossFit competition, and I didn’t know if I was going to be able to compete as well as I knew I could. Within those two weeks, Dr. Luke worked with me to regain my strength and mobility so that I was able to compete and compete well. I would recommend him to anyone not only because of his expertise, but also his determination to keep people moving and to keep them doing what it is they enjoying doing.

TOP QUESTIONS FROM YOU

Frequently Asked Questions

Does dry needling hurt?

Most people feel very little on insertion. What you may notice is a brief cramp or twitch when the needle reaches a tight band, which lasts a second or two and is a sign the right spot was found.

Is dry needling the same as acupuncture?

The needle is similar but the reasoning is not. Dry needling targets specific muscle tissue identified in a physical exam, whereas acupuncture works from traditional Chinese medicine principles.

Will I be sore afterwards?

Some people feel a dull ache in the treated area for a day, similar to post-training soreness. Gentle movement usually settles it faster than resting.

Can I train after dry needling?

Light training is usually fine and often helpful. We would generally avoid a maximal session in that muscle group the same day and will tell you if that applies to you.

How many sessions will I need?

Often fewer than people expect. Needling is a tool to unlock a restriction rather than something you need weekly, and once movement improves the focus shifts to strength work.

Is it safe?

Yes, when performed by a trained provider using sterile single-use needles. We screen for the small number of situations where it is not appropriate before we start.

What is the twitch response?

It is a quick involuntary contraction when the needle contacts a tight band. It is brief, it is normal, and it often coincides with the tissue releasing.

Can I get dry needling if I am afraid of needles?

Tell us and we will talk it through. The needles are far thinner than the ones used for injections, and if you would rather not, there are other ways to reach the same tissue.

Where on my body can it be used?

Most large muscle groups, including the hips, glutes, shoulders, calves, and along the spine. Placement is always based on what your exam shows.

No. Book a free consultation and we will assess whether needling is the right tool for what is going on before recommending it.
