Some restrictions do not release under hands alone. A smooth steel instrument lets us find and work exactly the tissue that is limiting you, then load it so the change sticks.

What is IASTM?

IASTM stands for instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization. Instead of treating with hands only, we use a smooth, contoured steel instrument along the skin to work through muscle, tendon and fascia. You may have heard it called by brand names such as Graston Technique.

The instrument does two things hands cannot. It gives us far more feedback, so we can feel exactly where the tissue is dense or restricted, and it lets us apply a precise amount of pressure to that one spot rather than a broad area.

It is not a massage and it is not meant to hurt. You will usually feel a gritty or grabby sensation over the restricted area that eases as the tissue changes, and some people get short-lived pink flushing over the treated spot.

It also is not a standalone fix. IASTM opens a window where the tissue moves better, and the loading we do immediately afterward is what teaches your body to keep that range. That pairing is the whole point.

Good reasons to use IASTM
Chronic tendon pain that keeps returning
Scar tissue after an injury or surgery
Stiffness that stretching never touches
Tight calves, forearms or hip flexors
Plantar fascia and Achilles restrictions
Tennis and golfer's elbow
the benefits

When we use IASTM

IASTM is a tool, not a treatment plan. Here is where it earns its place in one.

Stubborn tendon problems

Achilles, patellar, elbow and plantar fascia cases that have plateaued respond well to targeted instrument work followed by loading.

Post-injury and post-surgical tissue

Where tissue has healed dense and does not glide, focused work restores motion the area gave up.

Restrictions that outlast stretching

When an area feels tight for months regardless of stretching, the limit is usually tissue quality, not length.

Getting range before you load it

We often use it to open motion at the start of a session, then immediately load that new range so you keep it.

Don't guess which one is yours — booking takes a few seconds.

Dr. Luke Bergner is a fantastic coach and guide. I can’t say enough good things about his approach. He truly listens, educates, and tailors his input and exercises to meet me where I am, while encouraging me to challenge myself. He builds confidence and strength! He’s thoughtful, flexible, encouraging, and thorough. I have autoimmune symptoms that were causing pain and limiting my lifestyle. Dr. Luke asked questions, learned, and provided me with options so that I could adapt to my symptoms day by day and still move forward. I’m grateful and glad that I went to see Dr. Luke!

I am very pleased with the results I got from my experience working with Dr. Luke on some back/hip issues. I was leery with his different approach to address my discomfort but his treatment really does seek to rebuild you and give you a long-term fix. He is extremely flexible and worked around some crazy travel plans I had during our time together to make sure I still got the results I wanted. I cannot recommend enough at least taking a phone call with him to discuss any long-term, lingering pain issues you might have to see if you'd be a good fit for one of his programs.

I went to see Dr. Luke at the recommendation of my sister to see about some SI Joint pain that was limiting my strength and mobility. This was about two weeks from a CrossFit competition, and I didn’t know if I was going to be able to compete as well as I knew I could. Within those two weeks, Dr. Luke worked with me to regain my strength and mobility so that I was able to compete and compete well. I would recommend him to anyone not only because of his expertise, but also his determination to keep people moving and to keep them doing what it is they enjoying doing.

TOP QUESTIONS FROM YOU

Frequently Asked Questions

Is IASTM the same as Graston Technique?

Graston Technique is one brand of instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization. The category is IASTM, and several instrument systems fall under it. What matters more than the brand is whether the work is targeted and paired with loading afterward.

Does IASTM hurt?

It should not. Expect a gritty, grabby sensation over restricted tissue that eases as it changes. Some people get temporary pink flushing over the area. If it is genuinely painful, the pressure is wrong and we adjust it.

How many IASTM sessions will I need in Overland Park?

It is used inside regular visits rather than sold as a package, so it depends on your case. Most people notice a change in motion the same day, and the strength work between visits is what makes it hold.

Who should not get IASTM?

We avoid it over open wounds, active infections, recent fractures, and certain skin or blood clotting conditions, and we screen for those at your evaluation. If it is not appropriate for you, we have other options.

Do I need IASTM or dry needling?

They solve different problems. Needling reaches deeper trigger points, IASTM works surface tissue quality and glide. Your exam decides, and some visits use neither.
